Dialectal Feature Imitation in Norwegian
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigates the ability of speakers to imitate features from another dialect of their native language. Speakers from two different Norwegian dialects spoken in Stavanger and Trondheim produced speech material using their own and each other’s dialect. Acoustic analysis involved the occurrence of preaspiration in vowel – voiceless stop contexts. Measurements revealed that preaspiration occurs in both dialects but that its duration is longer in the Stavanger dialect. In imitations speech rate was found to be reduced, suggesting increased speaking effort. In general, both speaker groups successfully adapted their preaspiration production to the norm for the imitated dialect. At the same time, gender-specific as well as idiosyncratic factors seemed to influence imitation performance.

Perception and Production in Pitch Accent System of Korean
This research investigates dialectal variations of the pitch accent system in Korean. Specifically, this paper is focused on how speakers of a nonlexical pitch accent dialect are influenced by a lexical pitch accent dialect. Three experiments have participants from two dialectal regions produce pitch accent minimal pairs, and imitate and identify continua spanning pitch accent categories. Resul...
متن کاملDesign of Cubic Spline Wavelet for Open Set Speaker Classification in Marathi
In this paper, a new method of feature extraction based on design of cubic spline wavelet has been described. Dialectal zone based speaker classification in Marathi language has been attempted in the open set mode using polynomial classifier. The method consists of dividing the speech signal into nonuniform subbands in approximate Mel-scale using an admissible wavelet packet filterbank and mode...
متن کاملWhen nothing is good enough: Dialectal variation in Norwegian imperatives
This paper presents an analysis of imperative formation in Norwegian. The analysis occasions discussion of variation as reranking in OT, as well as providing a novel example of a grammar in which 'null' is the optimal candidate. The Norwegian imperative is in most cases identical to the verb stem (cf. Faarlund, Lie & Vannebo 1997:477). For verbs having the familiar disyllabic structure with a f...
متن کاملFour kinds of object symmetry
Abstract: This paper examines cross-speaker and cross-dialectal variation in object symmetry effects in three Germanic languages, English, Norwegian and Swedish. We argue that object symmetry effects are not a unified phenomenon, but rather that the availability of locality obviating theme movement out of applicative structures has different sources in different constructions. Both case-based a...
متن کاملWeaving Together the Normative and Regulative Roles of Government: How the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund's Responsible Conduct Is Shaping Firms' Cross-Border Investments
Based on institutional theory, I extend research on the regulative role of national government in society, and suggest that government exerts important influences on firms‘ actions through the diffusion of norms. I suggest that by instituting the Council on Ethics which publicly ―censors‖ and ―certifies‖ the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund‘s cross-border investments, the Norwegian government co...
